3 Wondtacular Ways to Boost Your Graphic Design Career

Graphic design is constantly evolving – which means those looking to hop on board should be mindful of the technological advances and ever shifting tastes that govern the design world.

One of the best ways to get involved – and stay relevant – in this fast flowing industry, then, is to boost your design skills through a variety of online art and design courses and tutorials.

First, though, it’s important to recognise the ways in which design runs through almost every facet of your life, with an appreciation of great design and a thirst for understanding how things are constructed virtually indispensable.

Got that?

Then read on for three wondtacular ways to boost your graphic design career …

Learn the fundamentals of design

Take the time each day to deconstruct the objects around you and figure out what it is about their design that makes them work. What do you like? What don’t you like? What makes one design work better than another does?

It pays to think of design as not just a way of making things look good, but as a means to solving a problem or filling a need. Whether it’s a logo, a piece of clothing or a car windshield, they’re all designed to fulfil an aesthetic AND practical requirement.

Additionally, learn about other designers whose work you admire and explore what it is that makes them tick and understand how their careers were shaped – what courses they took, what skills they deem important – to get where they are today.

Enhance your portfolio

It may seem obvious if you want to get anywhere in the design world, but a spectacular portfolio has the potential to make a world of difference to your career prospects. It’s a display cabinet for your design skills and absolutely essential if you want a prospective client to hire you for a design job.

Ensure you showcase your very best work in your portfolio – this can be a physical portfolio or an online version – so budding employers can consume it and get a sense of what it is that you can offer. Consequently, take the time to research how your portfolio should be formatted to make it as professional as possible.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes

We all want to put our own stamp on things and ensure our work is instantly recognisable – but that’s not going to happen straightaway. In fact, the signature styles of many great designers have only become obvious late in their career.  Your style, like the art, will evolve over time, maturing with your tastes and incorporating inspirations from other designers.

With that in mind, don’t be afraid to make mistakes when you first set out on your graphic design journey. In the beginning, you’ll make plenty of blunders, that much is obvious. However, it’s what you take away from the errors that counts – and the quicker your work will improve. Mistakes can be disheartening, but don’t allow it to curb your enthusiasm. Keep your head up and constantly be on the lookout for inspiration if you feel your gusto waning.
